Body-Based Experiential Change for Cultural Sustainability
Monday, Oct 15, 4-6pm, Expo Hall
This workshop is based on the understanding that earth, human bodies, & societies are living, breathing systems that influence each other. The sustainability movement so far has focused primarily on environmentalism: ‘greening’ behaviors & products. It is time for the body, full of knowledge & creativity, to come center stage with its connection to the environment. It has a crucial role to play as a connector between emotional, physical & intellectual knowing in the question of sustainability. In this session, I introduce the body through the lens of dance, a field of study that deeply investigates & celebrates the universal human truth of intrinsic kinesthetic knowledge. I begin the session with a short performance that explores the relationship between body, culture, & earth. The performance is grounded in solid research drawing on eco-feminism, deep ecology, experiential learning, & dance studies. These fields of scholarship provide language & theoretical structure that elucidate the body’s relationship with culture & nature, & how it can be the bridge that sustainability has been looking for. After the performance, attendees will be invited into dialogue reflecting on the performance. Finally, I will invite participants to join me in a safe, supportive exploration of simple movement that helps us tap into the embodied knowledge we all carry. Embodiment allows for a lived experience, leading to community, connection, & ultimately change. Learning and communicating with the body present is a process that is highly under used, yet imperative for the kind of change we seek. We need these body-based resources to creatively contribute to campus sustainability & beyond.
Contemporary Dance Winter Workshops
A mini-series of two workshops to facilitate your dancing body to bend, stretch, roll, leap, and spin. Using a foundation of somatic techniques*, yoga, breath work, jazz, and modern dance, we will develop awareness and technical skill. We dance to a soundtrack of motivating world music. We dance in our own space to build strength and flexibility. We dance together to build community. For all levels.
*somatic techniques are those that are designed to integrate body and mind usually through slow, gentle movement targeting the interaction of your nervous and musculoskeletal systems. This series we will primarily draw on Alexander Technique.

Joy of Movement: Breathe, Move, Stretch; CU Boulder Campus, Outdoors or Humanities 190
This workshop invites you to relax through deep breathing techniques and supportive postures. By inviting relaxation, we move freely into a dance-centered warm up that focuses on moving the body to prepare it for learning and focus. We move alone and in relationship to each other, creating a sense of connection and play among class participants. We also begin to address the relationship between body and earth. Please wear comfortable clothing for movement.

Move out of strain and into ease with this fun and informative workshop series. The series is held in six, two-hour sessions for twelve hours total. You may sign up for the entire series or a single class. This course is designed to help you gain a greater understanding of how the body moves, maintains balance, and establishes patterns that lead to tension. Breaking these patterns enhances grace and poise while reducing pain and fatigue. In this course we will also explore how posture and movement patterns can affect mood and mental state.
