Massage Therapy

"Massage Therapists talk about massage as though relaxation is a magical state. In reality, it is physiological and biochemical.  It's certainly not a matter of simply what is going on in your head.  A lot of things happen beneath the skin that are very measurable."  -Tiffany Field, PhD, Founder Touch Research Institutes

Massage Therapy will benefit you if you:

  • Struggle with stress management
  • Find yourself often fatigued, irritable, and/or impatient
  • Have tension headaches
  • Suffer from 'computeritis': shoulder, neck or back pain, hip stiffness, overall aches
  • Tend to be anxious
  • Want to relax
  • Are experiencing a life-change
  • Want more body awareness
  • Are an artist looking for performance enhancement or to reconnect with your creativity
  • Are a leader
  • Are motivated
  • Are curious

Massage techniques most often used:

Neuromuscular Therapy/Trigger Point Therapy
Awareness Through Movement (rocking, shaking)
Acupressure/Shiatsu*
Connective Tissue Therapy
Stretching

I am most successful treating people who enjoy moderate, gentle pressure.  I do not 'push hard', yet my touch still accomplishes deep affects. My touch is gentle and firm; my work is therapeutic, specific, caring, and precise.

Movement Education & Stretching

Stretching Sessions

Want to learn how to stretch more effectively?  Know that stretching is good for you but need help getting started? Want some help creating a stretching routine that realistically works for you?

Initial Stretching Session (about 50 minutes)

  • Discuss your goals: More flexibility?  More range of motion? Less stiffness? Less pain? Where?
  • Review: You and Maren together review the stretches you already do, checking your alignment to ensure you are stretching what you want to be stretching in an alignment that will give you the most benefit
  • Routine: Learn new stretches that address your goals, seamlessly sequenced so they flow together, like a dance, and make sense to your body.
  • Homework: No, I can’t fix years of habit in one hour!  You’ll receive an email after your session with your personalized routine that we designed.  It will include suggested frequency, timing, and location of your stretching (What?! Stretch in the bathroom?? If it’s your only place of peace and quiet…yes!)

Follow-Up (30 minutes)

In a time frame that works for you, I recommend 1-2 weeks after your initial session, we’ll review your technique and ad more stretches if you are ready.

Q & A

*What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a floor-based session of acupressure and stretching. The client wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies on a soft mat on the floor.  The therapist uses thumbs, palms, forearms, and sometimes feet to apply pressure to specific points in a strategic way. The points correspond to various meridians as mapped in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The therapist also stretches the client, all while the client stays relaxed – this is passive stretching. (It feels GREAT!)  For more info visit:http://altmedicine.about.com/b/2008/06/10/what-is-shiatsu.htm
