"Massage Therapists talk about massage as though relaxation is a magical state. In reality, it is physiological and biochemical. It's certainly not a matter of simply what is going on in your head. A lot of things happen beneath the skin that are very measurable." -Tiffany Field, PhD, Founder Touch Research Institutes

Session Options
All treatments with Maren Waldman, LMT, NCBTMB
Stretching (30 min, 60 min) Want to learn how to stretch more effectively? Know that stretching is good for you but need help getting started? Want to create a stretching routine that realistically works for you? Using her expertise in anatomy, and dance, Maren works with you to advance your level of knowledge and experience stretching in ways that support your goals. Goals may include increasing flexibility, range of motion, or having an easier time tying your shoes. The first session is 60 minutes where goals and prior experience are discussed and the beginnings of a plan are created. Maren is available to stretch with you regularly, or to create a stretching dance that you practice on your own. A combination of both is most effective.
User's Guide to Your Body © (30 min, 60 min) Move out of strain and into ease. Using self-massage techniques combined with basic musculoskeletal anatomy information, you will learn techniques to reduce painful areas of chronic tension on your own. This results in reducing the effects of stress in your life. Some stretching may be included depending on the area of the body being addressed and time. These sessions will be particularly useful if you experience ongoing pain or discomfort in any of these areas: feet, legs, thighs, hips, low back, upper back, shoulders, neck, forearms, wrists, hands (yes, basically this will help your whole body!).
Massage Therapy (30 min, 60 min)
Therapeutic massage treatments focus on stress reduction especially in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, headaches, exhaustion, and high levels of general anxiety. With a sensitive and specific touch, Maren tunes in to what your body needs each session to bring you closer to wellness. After receiving a massage you may feel any or all of the following: relaxed, healthier, grounded, as if you are light and almost floating, tired, energized. Guaranteed you will feel different from when you arrived.
Shiatsu/Acupressure (30 min, 60 min) Bodywork with client clothed, lying on a mat on the floor. More below in Q&A.
Integrated Session (60 min, 90 min) A customized combination of massage, stretching, and User's Guide to Your Body techniques that best address your specific areas of tension, pain, and stress. This session is often the most effective way to experience positive change.
Q & A
What massage techniques do you use at Moving Joy Studios Massage?
Maren most often uses Swedish, Neuromuscular Therapy/Trigger Point Therapy, Acupressure/Shiatsu, Connective Tissue Therapy, Awareness Through Movement (rocking, shaking), and Stretching. What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a floor-based session of acupressure and stretching. The client wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies on a soft mat on the floor. The therapist uses thumbs, palms, forearms, and sometimes feet to apply pressure to specific points in a strategic way. The points correspond to various meridians as mapped in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The therapist also stretches the client, all while the client stays relaxed – this is passive stretching. (It feels GREAT!) Learn more about Shiatsu here.
What kind of pressure do you use?
Her touch is gentle and firm; the work is therapeutic, specific, caring, and precise. Maren is most successful treating people who enjoy moderate, gentle pressure. She does not 'push hard', and her touch still accomplishes deep affects.
How many times will I need to come?
Clients who have the most positive results working with Maren experience major change in their body in 6-8 weeks. For pain and stress treatable with massage and bodywork, in most cases 6-8 weeks brings the condition under control. 8-12 weeks allows the chance make more positive change in habits, body structure (including posture), and prevention.
